What Your Tyres Are Trying to Tell You

Tyres don't normally wear badly for no reason.

Where they're wearing can give you a pretty good clue as to what's going on with the car.

And on a modified car, it's definitely worth paying attention.

Wearing on the inside edge?

We see this a lot on lowered cars.

Too much negative camber can contribute to inner-edge wear, but camber isn't always the only culprit. Incorrect toe can absolutely destroy the inside of a tyre too.

That's why simply looking at a low car and blaming the camber doesn't tell you the full story.

Wearing on both edges?

First thing to check is tyre pressure.

Running a tyre underinflated can cause more wear towards both shoulders as the tyre isn't sitting on the road as it should.

If your pressures are right and it's still happening, it's worth getting the car checked properly.

Wearing through the middle?

This can be a sign of running too much tyre pressure, although tyre construction, load and how the car is driven can all affect the wear pattern.

Again, don't just assume. Check the pressures and inspect the tyre properly.

One tyre wearing differently to the others?

That's when we'd want to take a closer look.

Alignment could be out, but worn bushes, suspension components or something bent or damaged can also cause unusual wear.

There's no point throwing an alignment at a car if something else is actually causing the problem.

“It's just because the car's lowered”

Not necessarily.

Lowering a car changes its suspension geometry, but that doesn't mean destroying tyres is something you just have to accept.

A good geometry setup can help manage tyre wear while still keeping the car sitting and driving how you want it.

There may be compromises on more extreme setups, but that's very different from accepting a set of tyres being ruined for no reason.
