What Does Wheel Alignment Actually Do?
If you've ever been told your car needs a wheel alignment, you might have wondered what that actually means.
Geometry is much more than making the steering wheel sit straight. It affects how your car handles, how stable it feels, how your tyres wear and how much confidence you have behind the wheel.
Whether your car is completely standard or heavily modified, good geometry makes a difference.
The three main alignment angles
Camber
Wheel tilt inwards or outwards
Camber is the angle your wheels lean when viewed from the front of the car.
A small amount of negative camber, where the top of the wheel leans inwards, can improve grip when cornering. Too much, though, and you'll start wearing the inside edges of your tyres much faster.
Toe
The direction your wheels point
Toe describes whether your wheels point slightly towards each other or slightly away from each other.
It might only be a tiny adjustment, but it has a huge effect on how the car drives. Incorrect toe is one of the biggest causes of uneven tyre wear and can also make the car feel nervous or wander on the road.
Caster
The steering angle when viewed from the side
Caster is the angle of the steering when viewed from the side of the car.
It affects how the steering feels, how well the car holds a straight line and how easily the steering wheel returns to centre after a corner. Get it right and the car feels more planted and confidence inspiring to drive.
Why does geometry matter?
Your tyres are the only part of the car that actually touches the road.
If the geometry isn't right, the tyres can't do their job properly.
That can lead to:
-
Uneven tyre wear
-
Poor steering feel
-
Less grip through corners
-
A car that pulls to one side
-
Reduced stability at higher speeds
A proper geometry setup helps the car feel balanced, predictable and far more enjoyable to drive.
There isn't a one-size-fits-all setup
Every car is different.
A daily driver needs a different setup to a fast road car. A track build won't use the same settings as a drift car, and a bagged show car has its own requirements too.
At PRJKT ZERO, we don't chase numbers for the sake of it. We build every setup around the car, the suspension that's fitted and, most importantly, how you actually use it.
