The £40 Alignment That Costs You More

We've all seen it.

“4 wheel alignment £40.”

For a standard car that just needs a basic adjustment, that might be absolutely fine.

The problem is when a modified car gets treated exactly the same way.

Lowered suspension, coilovers, air ride, adjustable arms, different wheels and tyres. They all change how a car needs to be set up.

Getting everything into the green isn't always the answer.

Tracking vs proper geometry

Basic tracking mainly focuses on which direction the wheels are pointing.

Geometry looks at the bigger picture.

Camber, toe and caster. Ride height. Suspension. Wheels and tyres. What adjustment the car actually has.

And most importantly, how you drive it.

A daily shouldn't be set up like a track car. A drift car shouldn't be set up like a bagged show car.

Simple.

“But everything was green?”

Green generally means the measurement is within the target range being used by the alignment system.

On a standard car, great.

On a modified car, the setup you actually want might be different.

The numbers need context. We don't just chase green boxes and call it done.

Cheap gets expensive when tyres are involved

Incorrect geometry can mean uneven tyre wear, poor steering feel and a car that just doesn't feel right.

And finding out when the inside edge of an expensive tyre is already dead isn't ideal.

Sometimes alignment isn't even the problem. Worn bushes, damaged parts or a lack of adjustment can all stop us getting the setup where it needs to be.

That's why checking the car properly matters.

Does every car need custom geometry?

No.

If your car is standard and just needs its alignment correcting, a basic alignment might be all it needs.

If you've lowered it, changed the suspension, fitted adjustable components or want the car set up for a specific use, that's where custom geometry comes in.
