Before You Add More Power...
Everyone wants more power. We get it.
But if the car doesn't handle particularly well now, adding more power probably isn't where we'd start.
Before spending money on engine upgrades, have a look at what's underneath the car first.
Check what you've already got
You'd be surprised how much difference sorting tired suspension can make.
Worn bushes, old dampers and tyres that have seen better days can make a car feel pretty rubbish, even if everything else is good.
Sometimes replacing what's worn is all it needs. You don't always need to start throwing upgrades at it.
Spend money on decent tyres
Not exciting, but important.
If the tyres aren't up to the job, you're going to struggle to make use of any extra power anyway.
Good tyres make a difference everywhere. Acceleration, braking, cornering, wet weather. Definitely worth sorting before looking for another 50bhp.
Suspension next
If you do want to upgrade the suspension, don't just buy the lowest or stiffest thing you can find.
For a road car, a decent set of lowering springs or coilovers might be all you need. If you're building something more focused, adjustable arms and other components might make sense too.
It depends entirely on the car and what you're doing with it.
And get it set up afterwards
This bit gets forgotten a lot.
If you've changed the suspension or ride height, get the geometry checked afterwards.
There's not much point spending good money on suspension and then driving around with the alignment miles out.
So, power or suspension first?
There's obviously no rule saying you can't do power first.
But if the car is on tired suspension, questionable tyres or hasn't had the geometry checked in years, we'd probably spend the money there first.
You'll likely enjoy driving it a lot more too.
